Understanding Procedures: Procedures are not rules. Procedures are how we get things done. Expectations of actions. When rules are broken, there exists a consequence to assist students to correct their behavior in order to learn what is appropriate. Broken rules are teachable moments that help the student grow. When a procedure is not followed by a student there is no discipline, a student is simply reminded of how to correctly complete the task. Procedures are put in place to aid in maintaining a proper learning environment for students. Of course, when procedures are blatantly ignored after repeated reminders, the issue is no longer a matter of procedure as it is one of disrespect for the other students and the teacher. At that point, consequences would be necessary. I hope this explanation helps us all understand how to use procedures in the classroom to have a joyful and productive school year. |
